Mainz Laments as Nigerian Star Balogun Faces Suspected Cheekbone Fracture

In a setback for both Super Eagles and Mainz 05, Leon Balogun, the formidable defender, is grappling with a suspected cheekbone fracture following Mainz’s 2-0 loss to Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga on Friday. The 29-year-old Nigerian, who encountered a similar injury last year, had to be substituted off the field in the 74th minute.
Mainz expressed their concern and well-wishes through an official tweet, stating, “Today he had to come off with a suspected cheekbone fracture. Get well soon Leon!”
Balogun, a linchpin in the Super Eagles squad, played a pivotal role in securing their place in the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Nigerian national team remained undefeated in African qualifying Group B, clinching four victories and a draw in five games. Notably, Balogun was part of the triumphant Eagles side that secured their World Cup berth by defeating Zambia 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on October 7.
However, with the suspected cheekbone fracture, Balogun is now facing the possibility of missing the upcoming dead rubber World Cup qualifier against Algeria scheduled for November. The defender’s absence would be a significant blow for both Mainz and the Super Eagles as they navigate critical fixtures in their respective campaigns.
The football fraternity now awaits updates on Balogun’s condition and hopes for a swift recovery for the talented defender, whose prowess has been instrumental in Nigeria’s recent football successes.
