Brentford defender Michael Kayode scored and contributed to another goal on his senior Italy debut as the Azzurri beat Turkey 4-1 in the Nations League in Bursa.

The 22-year-old was handed his first cap after progressing through Italy’s youth teams and made an immediate impact as Italy responded to their previous defeat with a convincing victory.

Kayode’s initial effort was saved, but Davide Frattesi reacted fastest to the rebound to put Italy ahead. The right-back then doubled their advantage by scoring his first international goal, completing a memorable first appearance for the senior side.

“I didn’t expect my debut to go like this, so I am really happy,” Kayode said after the match.

The Brentford player said Italy had been determined to produce a strong response in a demanding environment.

“We played in the first half with a fantastic simplicity and determination. We wanted to really prove ourselves in a difficult match in an incredible stadium atmosphere, so winning here was fantastic,” he added.

Kayode was eligible to play for Nigeria, but said representing Italy was a straightforward decision after he came through the country’s youth system.

Asked about Nigeria’s approach, he told Football Italia: “It was a very easy decision. I went through all the youth teams here. Nigeria approached me, but I never thought about changing national teams.

“I think Italy have always been a great national team, and playing here is an honour.”

The defender developed through Italy’s youth setup before earning his senior opportunity, and his performance against Turkey marked another step in his international career with the Azzurri.

Kayode’s club career has also taken him to England. He joined Brentford from Fiorentina on a €500,000 loan deal in January 2025, with the agreement including an option to make the transfer permanent.

Brentford later exercised that option, reportedly completing the permanent transfer for €17.5 million.
