Morocco 2025: Five Nigerian players to inflict revenge on Benin Republic

By Wale Mustapha
Nigeria’s senior national team are set to host the Cheetahs of Benin on Saturday, September 7th, marking the start of their 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign.
As Nigeria prepares for the encounter, they enter the match as favorites, despite a recent setback against the same opponent three months ago in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
With a wealth of talent available, Coach Augustine Eguavoen and his technical staff have several options to consider. Here’s a look at five Super Eagles stars who are expected to play pivotal roles in securing Nigeria’s first victory in four games:
- Victor Osimhen
The reigning African Player of the Year, Victor Osimhen, is set to make a significant impact following a turbulent period with Napoli. Having recently completed a loan move to Galatasaray after failed transfers to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli and Chelsea, Osimhen is eager to showcase his abilities. Despite not having featured in a game for club or country since May, he is poised to make a strong comeback and prove his worth against the Cheetahs.
- William Troost-Ekong

As the captain and defensive leader of the Super Eagles, William Troost-Ekong will play a crucial role in the backline. Known for his exceptional defensive coordination and aerial prowess, Troost-Ekong will be instrumental in thwarting any attacking threats from the Cheetahs. His presence in set-piece situations also makes him a potential target for scoring rare but important goals.
- Ademola Lookman
Ademola Lookman, recently nominated as the only African in the 2024 FIFA Ballon d’Or awards, is ready to demonstrate why he earned this recognition. The Atalanta winger has been a key player for Nigeria since the last AFCON. With a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to enhance the team’s image, Lookman is expected to be a significant threat to the Benin defense.

- Raphael Onyedika
Raphael Onyedika made his mark in the last encounter between the two nations by scoring from a deeper midfield position. Although not primarily known for his goal-scoring, the Club Brugge midfielder excels in his defensive role and is highly valued for his contributions at the base of midfield. Onyedika has continued his strong performances for his club this season, and his high-standard delivery could be crucial if given the opportunity by Coach Eguavoen.
- Moses Simon
Moses Simon is anticipated to bring his impressive form from Ligue 1 side Nantes into the match against the Cheetahs. The Nigerian winger has been in fine form, contributing a goal and assists for his club. Despite not having started a game for Nigeria since the last AFCON semifinal against South Africa, Simon remains a reliable attacking option and could prove to be a significant threat if called upon by the coaches.
As Nigeria looks to begin their AFCON qualifying campaign on a positive note, these key players will be essential in their quest for victory.
