Moses Aduku: Edo Queens coach aims automatic Champions League slot for Nigeria

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Edo Queens head coach, Moses Aduku is insisting that the team are not at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League to make up the numbers.

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership winners are in the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League finals for the first time, having won West Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

And 2022 NWFL Premiership title winner with Bayelsa Queens insists his side are in their debut continental finals to not only win it and but also increase the slots available to Nigeria.

“We just started preparation. Our purpose for going for the Champions League is not just to compete,” Aduku told Brila FM.

“We want to try to win the competition. Winning is in our mentality. We want to win and make Nigeria have automatic slot for next year.

“To do that, it requires hard work. We have started preparation and not losing focus.” He concluded.

In the tournaments three year history, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies of South Africa have won the competition twice in 2021 and 2023.

Moroccan side, AS FAR FC won the tournament in 2022 on home soil. Bayelsa Queens with a bronze medal in 2022 recorded Nigeria’s best outing at the competition.

The winner of the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League will automatically qualify for the next edition in 2025.
