Moses Effiong: 1980 AFCON-winning goalkeeper passes on

A member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning squad, Moses Effiong, has died.

  1. He passed on at age 65 after a long illness in the United States of America (USA).

The death of the former Sharks FC, New Nigeria Bank (NNB), and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) goalkeeper was confirmed by Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Akwa United.

Effiong worked with the Promise Keepers as a goalkeeper trainer before his death.

He was part of the Akwa United coaching crew that won two FA Cups in 2015 and 2017, as well as the NPFL title in 2021.

Apart from being a member of the Green Eagle squad, which won the AFCON in 1980, he also won two WAFU Cups.

In 1983 and 1984, they won the WAFU Cup as a player before retiring and going into coaching.
