Mourinho outmanoeuvres Barcelona as Real Madrid win tactical El Clasico

Real Madrid settled the El Clasico through a disciplined tactical performance in which Jose Mourinho exposed weaknesses in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona system. Rather than simply defending for long periods, Mourinho adjusted his pressing approach as the match developed, using Barcelona’s attacking commitment against them and exploiting the spaces left behind their advanced players. Barcelona, meanwhile, paid the price for individual errors and poor decision-making during attacking transitions.

Real Madrid’s tactical balance

Real Madrid switched effectively between a medium defensive block, a deeper shape and well-timed periods of higher pressing. Their objective was not only to protect the penalty area but also to control space and force Barcelona’s players into difficult decisions under pressure.

Flick relied on his familiar high press and advanced defensive line, but Real Madrid repeatedly found ways beyond the first wave. Once they escaped the Barcelona players moving forward to win the ball back, space opened behind the defence and their build-up quickly became a direct threat.

The home side did not need to attack continuously. Instead, they waited for opportunities to reach dangerous areas with as few passes as possible. Their pressure, particularly in the final third, was also more organised than it had been for much of the season.

It was one of Mourinho’s strongest performances in recent years and a reminder of his ability to manage major matches through tactical flexibility, rather than relying on excessive defensive retreat and allowing the opposition to dominate possession and control.

Bernardo Silva gave Real Madrid an important outlet in central midfield. His composure and reading of the game helped the side play through pressure, while his movement also drew Barcelona’s midfielders into specific areas and created openings out wide and between the lines.

Alongside him, Tchouameni provided defensive security and helped circulate possession, allowing Real Madrid to avoid rushing forward. Valverde’s use at right-back added pace, physical strength and the ability to recover quickly in the wide spaces created by the demands of the match.

Jude Bellingham was also important in retaining the ball under pressure and attacking the gaps behind Barcelona’s defence. He found himself in several promising positions, although his final decisions did not always match the quality of the openings.

Lamine Yamal contained

Restricting Lamine Yamal was central to Real Madrid’s defensive plan. The young winger is one of Barcelona’s main sources of creativity, particularly when given room to attack defenders one-on-one or cut inside.

Cucurella stayed close to him, while Diomande tracked back to support the defensive work. Collective cover from the full-back and the players on the opposite side further reduced Yamal’s freedom. Pressure on the ball-carrier and closed passing lanes also made it difficult for Barcelona to find him in dangerous positions.

Raphinha’s presence, with Lamine Yamal on the right and Gordon on the left, was not enough to restore Barcelona’s attacking threat. The issue was not simply the choice of players, but the team’s inability to deliver the ball into the right spaces after Real Madrid disrupted one of its main attacking routes.

Barcelona’s midfield, led by Pedri, struggled to break through the organised Madrid lines, with several players performing below their usual level.

Individual mistakes prove costly

Barcelona’s high defensive line can compress the pitch and support an aggressive press, but it becomes vulnerable when possession is not recovered quickly or the ball is played behind the defenders. Real Madrid showed patience in waiting for those moments, with Bernardo Silva and Tchouameni helping them retain possession before releasing Kylian Mbappe and Bellingham into the space between the defence and goalkeeper.

Pau Cubarsi was central to both decisive errors. His misplaced pass for the opening goal provided Mbappe with the chance to score after the ball struck the forward and went into the net.

For the second, Cubarsi was closest to intercepting a pass from the right side of the penalty area, but misjudged the situation. Camavinga won the ball and supplied Mbappe, who finished to make it two.

Those mistakes ultimately decided the contest and reflected the poor mental state of much of the Barcelona side after its impressive start to the current La Liga season.
