By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The 2023 Naija Super 8 entered its second day with two games at Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos as former league champions, Akwa United and Lobi Stars defeated Yobe Desert Stars and River United respectively on Saturday.

The first game witnessed Akwa United securing a 2-1 win over Yobe Desert Stars as New signing Anthony Chwukwu Ebuka headed the Promise Keepers in front off James Ajako’s delivery from a corner kick in the 34th minute.

Cyril Olisema fired a delightful strike into the net as Akwa United went into the half time break with a two goal lead. On resumption of play, Akwa United continued where they left off and were awarded a penalty when Salomon Chigoziem was brought down in the box.

Olisema dispatched the penalty but it was saved by goalkeeper Isa Ismail. Moments later, Yobe Stars reduced the deficit when Emmanuel James sent a low free kick beyond everyone into the net.

Akwa United thought they had increased their advantage when Osoba Kabir’s effort got into the net but the assistant referee ruled the goal out for offside, but Akwa United held on to record their first win of the tournament.

In the second match, Lobi Stars pipped Rivers United 2-1 after coming from a goal down.

Albert Korvah opened the scoring for the Port Harcourt based side in the 31st minute before Okoromi David’s half volley finds the back of the net for Lobi Stars’ equaliser in the 71st minute.

Chibuike Charles scored the winning goal for Lobi Stars in the additional minutes of the second half to seal a win for his team.
