By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
The Coordinator of the Nigeria Beach Soccer League (NBSL), Mr. Mahmud Hadejia says the league is one of the best-run Beach soccer leagues in Africa.
The Jigawa-born football administrator, who also doubles as the President of Africa Beach Soccer Union opined that the league is in its second season and weathering most challenges to emerge as one of the best in Africa.
“Challenges do come but we have been in this terrain and game long enough to learn enough so that when these challenges come we can easily overcome them,” Hadejia said on a radio station (Super FM, Ijebu Ode) this week.
“We thank God that we are getting some sponsors taking up interest in the game. It’s a thing of joy. Challenges like traveling for teams across the country as well as insecurity in the country which is a thing of concern. We have tried our best to make sure that our teams travel in the safest condition. This is one of the best run leagues if not the best run league in the whole of Africa. I can confidently say that.” Says Mahmud Hadejia.
The Super 4 of the 2022 Nigeria Beach Soccer League will kick off in Birnin Kebbi on October 7. Smart City FC, Badagry Warriors, Kada BSC, and Kebbi Fishers will compete for the 2022 NSBL title in Birnin Kebbi.
Mahmud Hadejia said: “This is the best stage you can think about in terms of the best players in the country, playing Beach Soccer. These are professionals that have went to the level of playing for the national team which is the Super Sand Eagles.
“They have represented Nigeria in a lot of competitions including the FIFA World Cup. If you want to watch and follow the best, I think this is the best platform that you can think of.
“I want to congratulate all the Super 4 teams that qualified. We have two teams from Lagos and two teams from the North which are Kaduna and Kebbi. Three out of the teams are also at the Super 4 last year. We have a debutant in Badagry Warriors Beach Soccer Club that is having its debut.
“I think it is going to be an interesting one. We are calling on Nigerians to tune in. They will be filled with a lot of joy and fun. Beach Soccer is all about fun with the dance, entertainment, and razzmatazz with everything you can think of in a football game. There is a lot you can enjoy by watching beach soccer from the comfort of your home.”
The acceptability of Beach soccer in Nigeria is gaining momentum with the establishment of various Beach soccer teams across the country participating in the league. And Hadeijia, who also doubles as the Kebbi Beach Soccer Association boss is excited about the growing popularity of the sport.
“There is no place in Nigeria where you can’t find quality sand to play Beach soccer. You can play at the beach, in the middle of the city, or at home so long as you have the right quality and you can play Beach Soccer,” he continued.
“Nigeria is blessed with sand in almost every state. In the Northern part where there are no regular beaches, you have the best quality sand you can find anywhere in the world.
“The beach here in Kebbi is looking very top-shaped. Experts have been here several times and told us that this is one of the best they have seen across the country. We have everything we need to play this game.
“Beach Soccer is open for all Nigerians. Anyone can play the game whether you are a footballer or play other sports, you can easily tune in to beach soccer and you get a lot of joy. Sand can be packed from outside the city into where one wants to play the game. That is the beauty of the game,” he concluded.
Players from the Nigeria Beach Soccer League finals will be selected to represent the country at this year’s Beach Soccer AFCON in Vilankulo, Mozambique. Nigeria will face host, Mozambique, Malawi, and Morocco in Group A.
