Nigeria, Ghana set to co-host Afcon 2025 after Guinea lose hosting rights

By Niyi Busari

Nigeria and Ghana co-hosted the African Cup of Nations in year 2000 where two stadia – one in Lagos and another in Kano, were used in Nigeria and could do it again in 2025.

This comes three months after former President of Nigeria Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick hinted about Confederation of African Football (CAF) withdrawing the hosting right of the 2025 AFCON from Guinea.

On October 1, the Confédération of African Football (CAF) in Algiers, Algeria announced the re-opening of bids for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2025.

The African football ruling body stripped Guinea of the right host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, known as AFCON. President of CAF, Patrice Motsepe, travelled to Conakry on Friday for discussions with interim president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya but could not guarantee their readiness to host Africans.
Other African countries including Nigeria who wish to host the African Nations Cup in 2025 can now submit their bids to win the hosting rights. Côte d’Ivoire will host the biggest African football championship in 2023.

Pinnick revealed that he has gotten the backing of the Minister of Sports to submit a co-hosting bid with Benin Republic.

“We are putting a bid together for a co-hosting of the tournament with the Benin Republic,” Pinnick hinted in July.
