Nigeria National League matches set to hit television screens next season

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Exciting news for football fans across Nigeria as the Nigeria National League (NNL) gears up to broadcast league games on television starting from the upcoming 2025 season.

In a recent conversation with Sports World, NNL chairman George Aluo revealed this ambitious plan, emphasizing the league’s commitment to reaching a wider audience and enhancing its visibility nationwide.

Aluo highlighted the ongoing efforts to make this vision a reality, noting that arrangements are underway to bring the second-tier league directly into the living rooms of Nigerians through television broadcasts.

“At present, we are streaming the games online via Global TV, but we are now looking to take the next step and bring the NNL matches to television screens across the country for the 2025 season,” Aluo announced.

While acknowledging the challenges encountered by leagues in securing television coverage, Aluo expressed optimism about the future, citing the progress made with Global TV as a promising start.

“It’s a gradual process. We’ve initiated the partnership with Global TV, and we believe it’s a step in the right direction,” he explained. “Although the NPFL faced hurdles with StarTimes initially, we are determined to overcome obstacles and ensure broader exposure for the NNL.”

With the groundwork laid through the collaboration with Global TV, Aluo envisaged a future where Nigerians would have greater access to NNL games on television screens, offering an immersive viewing experience for football enthusiasts nationwide.

“Perhaps by the next season, Nigerians can expect to witness more NNL matches on television,” Aluo projected.

As the NNL aims to elevate its profile and reach, the upcoming season promises to be an exciting chapter for Nigerian football, with four teams set to earn promotion to the elite Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) while four others face relegation from the top flight at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
