‘Nigeria ready for Canada’s Women’s World Cup test’ – Halimatu Ayinde
By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Nigeria midfielder Halimatu Ayinde is confident the team is battle ready for Friday’s opening Group B showdown against Canada at the Melbourne Retangular Stadium.
Ayinde was the last player to hit Super Falcons camp in Gold Coast, Australia, and was part of the goal scorers as Randy Waldrum’s side thrashed Australian club, Lions FC 8-1 in a friendly.
After outings in Canada 2015 and France 2019, the 28-year-old is in line to make her third seinor FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance in Australia and New Zealand but will unfortunately miss the opener against the Olympic champions due to suspension.
Despite her absence, the Rosengard midfielder is pleased with her teammates’ level of fitness and backs them to upset the odds against the Canadians.
“I’m grateful to God for the journey mercy and very happy and excited to meet everyone in good shape,” Halimatu Ayinde told Nigeriafootball.ng.
“From what I saw when I joined the team, every player was looking very fit and ready for the opening match, that was when I knew they had done good training sessions before I arrived.”
The three-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations winning midfielder had arrived at the Swedish champions from Eskilstuna United after the 2022 WAFCON in Morocco.
The former Western New York Flash of USA midfielder will be looking to inspire the West Africans to success in Down Under after missing out on the women’s Afcon title.
