By Monsurah Olatunji
Nigeria star Ifeoma Onumonu returned to club duties and registered an assist despite her late introduction in the United States’ National Women Soccer League against San Diego Wave.
The 29-year-old forward was in action for New York/New Jersey outfit Gotham FC, which suffered a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Wave on Sunday, August 20, 2023.
Onumonu did not return to Nigeria with the Super Falcons delegations as she headed back to the United States of America (USA) after their FIFA 2023 Women’s World Cup elimination.
She immediately started for the team for an NWSL fixture against the San Diego Wave from the bench.
Gotham FC were down two goals, and Onumonu was introduced for Delanie Sheehan in the 90th minute.
However, Onumonu provided the assist for Katherine Stengel in the 12th minute of additional time, but it was too late as the San Diego Wave held on for the win.
At the World Cup, Onumonu played an in-and-out role for the Super Falcons and she started on the left side of the attack in the opening game against Olympic champions Canada.
She was leading the line in the second group game against Australia, then came off the bench for the final group game against the Republic of Ireland.
The 29-year-old led the line for the African nation against the Lionesses, as they list 4-2 on penalties in the round of 16.
Onumonu and Gotham FC return to action when they take on Uchenna Kanu’s Racing Louisville in their next NWSL fixture scheduled for Sunday, August 27, 2023.
