By Saheed Afolabi
Nigeria forward Ndifreke Effiong was on target for Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya as they defeated Newroz 1-0 to close in on the Iraqi league title.
Coming into the contest, 12th placed Newroz were unbeaten in four matches, but league leaders, Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya ended their unbeaten run with a solitary second half strike.
Effiong scored the only goal in the game for Al-Areeq as they maintained their status as league leaders.
The goal was the Nigeria international’s second for the Iraqi club after his first goal against Al Sinaah since arriving from Nigeria Premier Football League side Akwa United.
Both sides had a fascinating first 45 minutes which ended in a barren draw despite the few chances recorded in the game.
Newroz gave Al-Areeq a run for their money and managed to force the table toppers hostage for majority of the encounter before Effiong’s second half goal gave league leaders a huge boost.
Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya still remain top of the Iraqi topflight league with 41 points from 19 matches, with two points lead at the top of the table and closely followed by Al Shorta in second place with 39 points.
