Nigeria thrash Tunisia to claim fourth U20 Africa Cup of Nations bronze in style

By Monsurah Olatunji

The Nigeria U20 men’s national team eased past their Tunisia counterparts with a 4-0 victory in the third-place playoff of the U20 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt on Friday.
The Flying Eagles bounced back from a quarterfinal 1-0 defeat to the Gambia to secure a fourth Bronze medal at the U20 AFCON by defeating Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles at the Cairo International Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Earlier on Monday, the Nigerians were handed their disappointment with the loss to the Gambians in Cairo, while the Tunisians’ dream of a final were ended b Senegal in a 3-0 loss at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia.
Ladan Bosso’s team opened the scoring just nine minutes into the game following a finish from Ibrahim Muhammad. Nigeria then dominated the match from start to finish, with their attacking prowess and solid defense proving too much for Tunisia.
The second half, like the first, started brightly for Nigeria, with Belgium-based Ahmed Abdullahi adding a second for the Flying Eagles with a superb effort in the 46th minute.
Two minutes later, Jude Sunday scored a fantastic solo goal to extend the advantage, before adding another one from the edge of the box in stoppage time. While the Flying Eagles will wait until Saturday to recieve their bronze trophy, Jude Sunday was named the Man-of-the-Match in the third place playoff encounter.
Attention will now turn to the FIFA U20 World Cup to be played in Indonesia between 20 May and 11 June 2023.
