Nigeria’s U20 national team finished their group stage outing at the U20 FIFA World Cup on a losing note following their 2-0 defeat to Brazil in the final Group D clash at La Plata on Saturday.
The young Selecao scored two first half goals through Jean Perdoso and Marquinhos to finished as group leaders with superior goal difference.
The Flying Eagles were expected to replicate their performances in triumphs over Dominican Republic against Italy which earned them back-to-back wins in the opening two matches of the competition.
However, they were second best for most parts of the match, even with series of threat posed at the Brazilians who looked too good to keep a clean sheet.
Ladan Bosso’s side came out stronger in the second half to stage a comeback after few changes.
Haliru Sarki and Emmanuel went close to get a goal for the West Africans but were both denied by the woodwork and goalkeeping brilliance of Brazilian goalkeeper Mycael.
Having finished as one of the best third placed teams, Nigeria will now wait for the concluding games in the other groups to know their opponents in the knockout stages.
In the other group tie, Italy defeated the whipping boys of the group, Dominican Republic 3-0 to leapfrog Nigeria to second and earn an automatic ticket to the knockout stages.
