By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Nigeria Women Football League has announced that its top-flight division in Nigeria, NWFL Premiership will embark on two-week break for Christmas and New Year festivities.

In a statement on Friday, the league board confirmed the holiday break on Sunday following the exhilarating Matchday Six encounters across eight centres, played during the mid-week.

According to the release, actions will resume in the elite division, from the second week of January 2024.

In a statement, NWFL Chairman Nkechi Obi expressed, “My sincere wishes go out to the incredible players showcasing outstanding skills, the tireless club management, and the enthusiastic fans who infuse our league with vibrancy. May this festive season bring joy, success, and a well-deserved rest to everyone involved.”

Heartland Queens and Edo Queens top the table in Group A and B with 11 and 12 points respectively ending the year as group leaders.

The top three teams from each group at the end of the regular season will qualify for the season-ending Super Six where Nigeria’s women’s league champions will emerge with an opportunity to represent the country at West African Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League Qualifiers to make it to the major tournament next year after missing out of the 2023 edition for the first time in the competition history.

The 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership season is set to resume on January 10, 2024.
