Nigeria’s Women’s World Cup bonus row gets House of Rep attention

By Saheed Afolabi
The bonus row involving the Nigeria Women national team and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have gotten the attention of the House of Representatives (HOR) as they promise to wade into the matter.
The Super Falcons had issued a warning of boycotting their first game at FIFA Women’s World Cup against Canada if their bonuses are not been paid.
HOR member, Hon Olumide Osoba during plenary said he was concerned about the embarrassment of protest or match boycott it would have on Nigeria if the Falcons were allowed to go ahead as he stressed on past experiences which didn’t go well.
“I am concerned about the potential embarrassment and negative impact on Nigeria’s reputation if the planned protest and boycott proceeds without intervention, as witnessed in previous incidents involving the national female basketball team,” Osoba told Mainland Metro News.
“There are historical instances of non-payment of salaries, allowances, and bonuses, as well as the arbitrary dismissal of players within the Nigerian women’s sports teams.”
This is not the first time that the Super Falcons and NFF will be at opposing ends due to non payment of match bonuses or allowances.
It took the NFF over six months to pay the Falcons their 2022 WAFCON match bonuses this includes the Falcons and Flamingos.
Nigeria will begin their campaign at the FIFA Women’s World Cup on the 21st of July against Olympic champions, Canada.
