Nkechi Obi: NWFL Chairperson reiterates Premiership kick-off date is sacrosanct

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Chairman of Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), Nkechi Obi says the kick-off date for the 2023/2024 Premier season is sacrosanct.

November 15, 2023, has been fixed for the country’s topflight to commence following the decision made by the clubs and board members at the NWFL Annual General Assembly (AGA) in Lagos.

The NFF board member reiterated that the 2023/2024 NWFL Premiership season will kickoff as scheduled.

“We are prepared for the next season. The date is cast in stone,” Obi told journalists.

“We are not shifting the kick-off date from November 15. We will play the season opener on November 15.”

After watching the third-place match and final of the 2023 Sheroes Cup where Edo Queens emerged champions, she expects a spectacle when the NWFL Premiership gets underway next month.

“I watched a few games. I watched the third-place match between Sunshine Queens and Dannaz Ladies and I have never seen a more interesting women’s football game locally.

“The reason being that this is supposed to be a friendly pre-season and yet it was played with such enthusiasm. In the space of ten minutes, we saw the three goals.

“Nigerians should get ready for a spectacle during the league from women’s football. What I am seeing here at this finals confirms what I saw in the morning. It’s a good development and a new dawn. I think the influence of the World Cup is rubbing off on all out clubs and they are putting their best foot forward.”
