NNL Hails High Standard of Regular Season, Super 8 Venue to Be Announced Next Week

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Chairman of the Nigerian National League (NNL) Board, Mr. George Aluo, has applauded the quality of play in the just-concluded 2024/2025 regular season, which wrapped up over the weekend with the emergence of eight teams for the Super 8 Playoff.

Speaking after watching one of the final games, Aluo — a veteran journalist turned football administrator — expressed satisfaction with the progress of the league.

“I’m so excited that the regular season, which kicked off with lots of excitement, has ended on a high,” he said. “Reports from all venues regarding the standard of play, officiating, and fan conduct are inspiring and commendable.”

He acknowledged that while the league is not yet perfect, notable progress has been made, with away wins becoming more common and losing teams accepting results without incident.

“I must commend the maturity of our players, coaches, and fans for raising the bar in our second-tier league,” Aluo noted. “We are making steady progress, and by God’s grace, we will get to the promised land.”

Aluo also congratulated the eight teams that qualified for the Super 8, describing their performances as a sign of better things to come.

“The competitiveness, zeal, and high standards of the regular season show that our league has really come of age. It’s still a work in progress, but we’ve shown that with the right attitude and determination, nothing is impossible.”

The NNL chairman revealed that the exact venue and date for the Super 8 playoff would be announced next week. He added that teams from Conferences A and B, which concluded their campaigns more recently, would be given a short rest before the tournament.

The eight teams that qualified for the Super 8 are:

  • Osun United
  • Crown FC
  • Kun Khalifa FC
  • Warri Wolves
  • Barau FC
  • Doma FC
  • Yobe Desert Stars
  • Wikki Tourists

The Super 8 Playoff will determine the four teams that will earn promotion to the Nigerian Premier League.
