By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Abia Warriors climbed to the summit of the 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table following a hard-fought 2–1 away victory against Niger Tornadoes in Minna on Sunday.
In one of the standout fixtures of Matchday 11, Imama Amapakabo’s men made a strong start, racing into a two-goal halftime lead through Sunday Megwo’s opener and an own goal by Sunday Akinmoladun.
The hosts reduced the deficit shortly before the hour mark when Abdulrasheed Dabai struck for Tornadoes, but the visitors held firm to secure a crucial win on the road.
The result moves Abia Warriors to the top of the table with 21 points from 11 matches, while Niger Tornadoes drop to fifth after suffering their first home defeat of the season.
Elsewhere in Lagos, Ikorodu City continued their fine form with a comfortable win over Kun Khalifat, moving up to third place thanks to goals from Chidera Oparaocha and Dagogo Ibifibura.
In Aba, Enyimba returned to winning ways with a 2–0 victory against Kano Pillars, as first-half strikes from Edidiong Ezekiel and John Bassey ended the People’s Elephant’s three-game losing run.
Rivers United also secured a narrow 1–0 win at home to Nasarawa United in Port Harcourt, with Timothy Zachariah grabbing the decisive goal — his second in as many matches following his CAF Champions League heroics.
It was stalemate elsewhere, as El-Kanemi Warriors and Rangers played out a goalless draw in Maiduguri, and Wikki Tourists held Barau FC to a 0–0 result in Kano.
In Ibadan, Shooting Stars were pegged back to a 1–1 draw by Katsina United.
On Saturday, Bendel Insurance and Warri Wolves settled for a 1–1 draw, while Kwara United shocked defending champions Remo Stars with a 3–1 win in Ilorin.
Meanwhile, the outstanding fixtures between Remo Stars and Nasarawa United, as well as Bendel Insurance and Rivers United, are scheduled for midweek.
