NPFL: Rabiu Ali reveals the key to sustained career longevity

By Saheed Afolabi

Rabiu Ali, the venerable captain of Kano Pillars, has lifted the veil on the secret to his enduring tenure in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), standing as the league’s longest-serving player at the remarkable age of 43.

Ali, affectionately known as the skipper of Masu Gida, attributes his remarkable longevity to a combination of passion for the game and disciplined lifestyle choices, coupled with unwavering adherence to sage advice from coaches.

In a candid reflection on his illustrious career, Ali underscores the intrinsic joy he derives from the sport, vowing to hang up his boots only when the time is right.

“Football is a source of immense pleasure for me, and I firmly believe that when the moment arrives for me to step away from the game, my body will signal its readiness,” Ali expressed, as quoted by the Punch.

“The long time I have spent playing football is not something I did for myself or someone did for me but it’s God’s privilege and His will.”

The seasoned midfielder attributes his enduring tenure not to personal accolades or external factors, but rather to the divine providence and will of God. Embracing the principles of his faith, Ali remains steadfast in his commitment to leading a virtuous lifestyle, steering clear of vices that could jeopardize his health and career prospects.

“As a devout Muslim, I am resolute in my commitment to abstain from any form of vice that could compromise my well-being, including abstaining from alcohol and other detrimental habits,” Ali affirmed.

Moreover, Ali acknowledges the invaluable guidance and counsel offered by the coaching staff, recognizing its pivotal role in safeguarding his health and prolonging his career.

“With the coaching crew, I listen attentively to their advice, which has been quite beneficial to my health status and aided my longevity in the game,” he added.

With Kano Pillars poised to face off against bottom-ranked Gombe United in their upcoming NPFL fixture on Sunday, April 21, Ali stands as a beacon of inspiration, exemplifying the virtues of dedication, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence on the field of play.
