NPFL: Rivers United, Andy Okpe engulfed in transfer imbroglio

By Saheed Afolabi

Rivers United is currently embroiled in a complex and confusing transfer dispute with star striker Andy Okpe, who joined the club from Remo Stars amid much fanfare.

Okpe, whose performances have made him a fan favorite, has reportedly attracted interest from top African clubs, but his transfer situation has taken a new turn.

Rivers United recently released a statement affirming that the forward remains a registered player of the club, with his contract running until 2027.

“Rivers United Football Club of Port Harcourt wishes to inform the general public, football stakeholders, and the media that Andy Okpe remains a registered player of the club and is still under contract until 2027,” the statement read.

The club has also expressed concerns over Okpe’s unexplained absence, claiming his whereabouts are currently unknown. Despite this, Rivers United emphasized that his contractual obligations to the club remain intact.

“Despite the player’s unapproved absence and unknown whereabouts, Rivers United FC emphasizes that Andy Okpe’s contractual obligations to the club remain binding and enforceable,” the statement continued.

Rivers United further warned other clubs and agents to refrain from negotiating with Okpe, as he has not been released from his duties with the club.

“The club has not released the player from his contractual duties, and any claims of his availability for transfer or engagement with other clubs or agents are entirely unfounded,” the statement concluded.

The situation has left both Rivers United and Okpe in a state of uncertainty, with the next steps yet to be clarified.
