NWFL: Edo Queens aim to conquer Africa under Chairman Phillip Shaibu

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The newly appointed Chairman of Edo Queens and former Deputy Governor of the state, Comrade Phillip Shaibu says the next target for the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership champions is to conquer the continent.

The Benin City-based side won the league title for the first time last season and also clinched the West Africa Zone B (WAFU-B) Women’s Champions League trophy in Cote D’Ivoire.

Unfortunately, Moses Aduku’s side could not maintain the winning momentum after a fourth-placed finish at the 2024 CAF Women’s Champions League despite beating two-time winner Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies (South Africa) in the group stage.

“Having won the NWFL title last season and remaining unbeaten so far this term, Edo Queens are determined to replicate the invincible record of their male counterparts, Bendel Insurance FC. Our target is to win the league again this year and make a strong return to the continent,” Shaibu told Completesports.com.

“The girls have gone unbeaten in the first stanza of the league, and I am praying they sustain this form until the end. Our goal is to qualify for the CAF Women’s Champions League and, this time, win the title for Nigeria.”

Edo Queens have won five of their seven league games in the league as they remain on course to defend their title.

The head coach of the team, Aduku, had remained in charge of the Club for three straight seasons, becoming one of the longest-serving.

He has proved his confidence with huge results, the best in the club’s history last season.

Ahead of the second stanza, the team hopes to become the first Nigerian club to win the CAF Women’s Champions League since its inception in 2021.
