NWFL Premiership MD1 Wrap: Heartland Queens and Edo go top after Royal and Robo routs

Matchday one of the 2023/2024 Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Premiership continued across seven centres on Wednesday with 22 goals scored after Tuesday’s game between Ekiti Queens and Delta Queens ended in a 0-0 draw.
Heartland Queens were the biggest winners of the opening matchday one with a 4-0 thumping of Royal Queens.
Obi Ogbala’s side raced to a 3-0 lead at half time thanks to goals from Onyinyechi Kalu, Chidinma Anaele, ad Gift Afigbediitor’s own goal.
Chinedu Chinaka sealed the win with the fourth goal in the second half. At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin City, Edo Queens recorded a 4-1 win against FC Robo Queens.
Two goals from Kafayat Mafisere and Eunice Godwin in the first half set the pace for a big win over the Lagos Landladies.
Eunice Godwin’s second in the second half coupled with a goal by Esther Moses ensured that Nkwocha Favours’ strike for Emmanuel Osahon’s side was mere consolation.
In Abuja, Nasarawa Amazons picked the solitary away win of the Matchday with a 3-1 victory over Naija Ratels.
A brace from Ayatsea Hembafan and Ojiyobwi Kesiena lifted the Solid Miners to a triumph over Onome Ebi’s captained side.
Ebi set up Davies Nora for Naija Ratels consolation goal in the 89th minute as she returned to the league where she started her career.
At Enyimba Stadium, Aba, Abia Angels won a five-goal thriller against Adamawa Queens.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the thanks to a goal from Mary Moses in the 15th minute.
Chiamaka Ojialor evened the scoreline in the 59th minute before the host took the lead in the 84th minute.
Loveth Bogyande thought she had scored the goal which will ensure her side travel home with a precious away draw but Amarachi Ndudim’s 92nd-minute goal gave Abia Angels a last-gasp win.
In Ikenne, Remo Stars Ladies avoided defeat in their first-ever top-flight game against former league winners, Rivers Angels.
Former Naija Ratels FC and Lakeside Queens player, Ezekiel Motunrayo opened the scoring for the Jewels of the Rivers as she headed in a free kick in the 12th minute.
Remo Stars responded with the equaliser in the 74th minute of play.
Another debutant, Dannaz Ladies also played out a 0-0 draw with Confluence Queens.
2021/2022 league winners, Bayelsa Queens forced host, Sunshine Queens to a 1-1 draw in Akure.
Suliat Abideen’s opener for this host in the 18th minute was canceled by Mary Itimi who salvaged a point for the Prosperity Girls.
The season opener between Ekiti Queens and Delta Queens ended in a goalless draw on Tuesday.
Heartland Queens with the results of the opening matchday took an early lead with a superior goal advantage ahead of Edo Queens.
Nasarawa Amazons and Abia Angels also followed suit with three points.
Matchday two of the league will be held next week Wednesday across eight centres.
