Obafemi Martins Recovers After Successful Surgery in the UK

Super Eagles’ forward, Obafemi Martins, has undergone successful surgery for a ruptured quadriceps tendon in the United Kingdom, following an injury sustained during Shanghai Shenhua’s Asian Champions League clash against Kashima Antlers, which concluded in a 2-2 draw.
The Shanghai Shenhua Instagram account shared a picture post-surgery, displaying Martins on the bed with his right leg securely bandaged. A confirmation message regarding the surgery’s success was also conveyed via the club’s Twitter account on Sunday.
“Martins had a successful surgery in the UK,” the club’s Instagram account affirmed, echoing the sentiment on Twitter.
Unfortunately, this injury sidelines Martins from potential selection for the Super Eagles in the forthcoming 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. The recovery process estimates a duration of up to seven months, extinguishing hopes of his World Cup participation.
Before his injury setback, Martins had displayed prolific form in the new Chinese season, netting four goals in seven appearances across various competitions for Shanghai Shenhua.
The injury proves a significant blow for both Martins and the Nigerian national team, dimming prospects for his participation in the World Cup tournament. However, with successful surgery underway, Martins begins his road to recovery, aiming to regain full fitness and resume competitive action after this challenging setback.
