“Only the best should be called” – Maureen Madu tasks Randy Waldrum ahead of Olympics outing

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigeria star Maureen Mmadu has outlined the keys to success for the Super Falcons as they prepare for the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.

Dismissing the notion of favoring home-based players, Mmadu cited the example of Uchenna Kanu, emphasizing that talent and merit should dictate selection.

With an impressive career that includes 52 appearances for the Nigeria women’s national football team and participation in four FIFA Women’s World Cups, as well as the 2000 and 2004 Summer Olympics, Mmadu brings a wealth of experience to her analysis.

Asserting that Nigeria should field its best and fittest players at the Olympics, Mmadu emphasized inclusivity, stating, “Whether home-based players or professionals, Nigeria is for everybody.”

Reflecting on past achievements, Mmadu highlighted the Super Falcons’ resilience at the World Cup, where they defied expectations despite being drawn in a challenging group.

“We have to play our best at the Olympics. No one gave them a chance at the World Cup where they were drawn in ‘Group of Death’ but they still reached the knockout rounds,” she continued.

“The same can happen at the Olympics. I have confidence in the team. We have to believe in this team, they have been improving.”

As Nigeria gears up to kick off their Olympic campaign on July 25 against Brazil, Mmadu’s insights serve as a rallying call for unity, determination, and unwavering support for the Super Falcons’ quest for Olympic glory.
