Onyekachi Apam reacts to being linked to Super Eagles coaching job

By Monsurah Olatunji

Former Nigerian international Onyekachi Apam has expressed his readiness to consider coaching the Super Eagles amid links to the vacant coaching position following Finidi George’s resignation.

The Nigerian football community is abuzz with discussions about the next Super Eagles coach after disappointing FIFA World Cup qualification results led to George’s departure.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is reportedly keen on appointing a foreign manager. However, some ex-players and fans believe in the potential of local coaches.

One advocate for local talent, Alex Onyia, suggested Apam as a suitable option. Apam, who led OGC Nice’s U15 team to an unbeaten season and earned 15 caps for Nigeria between 2007 and 2010, is seen as a promising candidate.

When asked about his interest in the Super Eagles coaching job, Apam acknowledged the challenges of coaching a national team but did not rule out the possibility.

“I can consider taking the job but it depends on the terms and conditions and whom I would be working with. At the moment, I can’t. We need to start with the junior team,” Apam told Sports Brief.

“It’s not an easy thing to do. But if you have the right players, you can achieve so much.”

The 37-year-old joins a list of several tacticians, including Pitso Mosimane, Barc Brys, and Antonio Conciecao, who have been linked with the job.

As the NFF deliberates on the next coach, the debate continues over whether a local or foreign manager would best serve the Super Eagles’ interests.
