Onyekuru’s Brace Proves Crucial in Anderlecht’s Thrilling Victory
Super Eagles striker Henry Onyekuru showcased his scoring prowess with a spectacular brace, contributing significantly to Anderlecht’s thrilling 4-3 away win against KV Mechelen in the Belgian top division on Friday.
The exciting match saw Anderlecht taking an early lead, thanks to Pieter Gerkens’ 18th-minute goal. Onyekuru extended their advantage in the 30th minute, only for Mechelen to respond swiftly with Rob Schoofs finding the net in the 34th minute.
Anderlecht regained their two-goal lead with Onyekuru’s second goal in the 37th minute. Just before half-time, Lukasz Teodorczyk added to their tally, making it 4-1 for the visitors.
Mechelen fought back in the second half, with Nicklas Pedersen scoring in the 60th minute to narrow the gap to 4-2. In the dying moments of the game, Boureima Bande managed to pull another goal back for Mechelen in the 92nd minute. However, Anderlecht held on for the 4-3 win.
Anderlecht’s victory moved them to third place in the league table with 18 points. Despite the win, they are still six points behind the league leaders, Club Brugge, who will face Joseph Akpala’s Oostende on Sunday.
Henry Onyekuru’s performance was a key highlight of the match, and his two goals took his tally to six goals in just nine league appearances for Anderlecht this season. The young striker, who is currently on loan from Everton, continues to impress and is a valuable asset to his team’s campaign in the Belgian top division.
