‘Opportunity for home-based players to excel’ – Garba Lawal on Eric Chelle’s Eagles roster

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Garba Lawal—a multifaceted midfielder from Nigeria’s illustrious generation—praised Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad selection as a positive indication of player development.

He said the roster will give home based players the chance to shine.

“It’s a commendable choice. I believe Chelle aims to provide opportunities for others to participate, which is beneficial,” Lawal remarked.

“It features a blend of international and home-based players. I hope the home-based individuals seize this chance.”

Lawal underscored the importance of performance for local athletes in such global arenas:

“There aren’t many professionals included, so the home-based players must demonstrate their abilities. As a player, this is the type of opportunity you seek. When called upon, you must deliver your utmost because the coach has already fulfilled his responsibilities.”

He also reiterated thoughts on the historical perspective, stating: “Figures like Westerhof, Keshi, Bonfrere Jo—they all undertook similar initiatives. This is not unprecedented. It is a customary approach to integrating local players.”
