Former Nigeria international Osaze Odemwingie has voiced criticism regarding the tactics employed by ex-Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro.

The 43-year-old, who recently completed a professional golf course after a notable football career, shared his views on Nigeria’s World Cup qualification campaign and the team’s performance in recent tournaments.

Despite Nigeria’s strong showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire, where they reached the final, Odemwingie was unimpressed with Peseiro’s defensive approach.

Odemwingie emphasized the need for a more attacking strategy, especially against African opponents. “Personally, I didn’t enjoy watching our team play in the last Nations Cup because we didn’t perform like our usual selves,” he said.

“We need to play defensively against top teams like Germany, Argentina, and Brazil, but be more ambitious in the African Cup.”

He stressed the importance of attacking in numbers and trusting the defensive line and goalkeeper. “We must be ourselves and recapture what’s missing in our football today,” he added.

Odemwingie also expressed hope for a quick resolution following Finidi George’s resignation, which he believes will help the team refocus and prepare effectively for upcoming matches. “Hopefully, there will be no drama in the team, and we pray for peace and harmony so we can get the job done for the collective good,” he concluded.

Odemwingie’s comments reflect a desire for a return to the Super Eagles’ traditional attacking prowess and stability as they strive for World Cup qualification.

The Super Eagles currently sit second from bottom in their World Cup qualifying group, with three points from four matches, trailing leaders Rwanda, South Africa, and Benin.
