Paris 2024: Sunday Oliseh sends subtle message to Super Falcons

As we get ready for official opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, former Nigeria captain and coach, Sunday Oliseh has reminisced on the historical moment Nigeria won the Gold medal.

Nigeria has won three medals at the Summer Olympics: gold in 1996, silver in 2008, and bronze in 2016, and the former Ajax star was part the class of “96.

Although, the men’s team did not qualify for this year’s football event, Nigerian football fans and ex-players will throw their full support behind the women’s team who made their return for the first time the 2008 edition.

In a subtle message to the squad, Oliseh urged them to aim for a medal despite the tough group stage opponents, Brazil, Spain, and Japan.

Oliseh shared a video of Muhammad Ali—regarded as the greatest heavyweight boxer—lighting the Olympic flame to officially open the tournament.

Reflecting on that moment, Oliseh wrote on his X page that he and his teammates had no idea they would go on to win the gold medal.

“Little did my teammates and I, present at the ’96 Olympics with him (Mohammed Ali), filled with emotions know that we were going home with Gold for our people!! 

“Naija is capable of great things when inspired.”
