By Wale Mustapha
Paul Onuachu will be a happy man heading to Nigeria camp for the 2023 African Cup of Nations after he scored for Trabzonspor in their 2-1 win over Samsunspor in the Turkish Super Lig clash on Thursday.
The 29-year-old forward was announced as replaced for injured Umar Sadiq in the Super Eagles’ team for the tournament.
Onuachu led the attack for Trabzonspor in their Matchday 16 and did not fall short of expectations.
Filip Benkovic handed the host the lead inside 20 minutes off a good delivery cross from Anastasios Bakasetas before Onuachu planted anotuer header in the stoppage time of first half putting Trabzonspor in full control of the match.
The lanky forward could have increased the tally for his side in the second half but saw his two efforts denied by brilliant goalkeeping.
Samsunspor would soon get a late off a spot kick converted by Taylan Antalyali in the adding minutes of entire duration.
Onuachu, however taken his season’s goal tally to nine with three assists from 15 matches for Trabzonspor.
He is expected to leave for Abidjan on time to team up with rest of Super Eagles ahead of Sunday’s opening match clash against Nzalang Nationale of Equatorial Guinea.
