Presidency takes charge of Super Eagles coach appointment – Reports

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Presidency, has taken charge of the appointment of the next coach of Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, according to multiple reports.

Since the resignation of Finidi George after dismal performances against South Africa and Benin Republic in the World Cup qualifiers, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), in collaboration with the Sports Ministry, has yet to make any decisions on the next Super Eagles coach.

Finidi took over from Jose Peseiro, who guided the three-time African champions to the silver medal at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire earlier this year.

The controversy surrounding the appointment of the new head coach has forced the president to wade in.

“The appointment of the new Super Eagles coach is now beyond the NFF and sports ministry,” a reliable source in the NFF told Completesports.com.

”The presidency is now in control of the entire process and one can just hope they will take the right decision.

“We don’t need whether they will consult the NFF or sports ministry before coming up with a final choice.”

Meanwhile, NFF Technical Director and former international, Augustine Eguavoen is expected to take naturally charge of the team pending the appointment of the new coach.

Before the end of the year, the Super Eagles will play six games as far as AFCON 2025 Qualifiers are concerned.
