President Federation Cup: Abakaliki FC to Hold Thanksgiving After Surviving Road Crash

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Abakaliki FC of Ebonyi State, fondly known as the Rice Boys, have announced plans to hold a special thanksgiving service following their survival of a road accident on their return from the 2025 President Federation Cup final.

An official of the club, who requested anonymity, confirmed that the thanksgiving would be organized to appreciate God for sparing their lives in what he described as a “minor auto crash without any casualties.”

“There’s no small accident. We need to return the glory to the Almighty. It’s by His divine grace that we survived what could have turned out to be a ghastly accident,” the official said.

“To God be the glory, no injury and no life was lost. It would have been a double tragedy after reeling from the President Federation Cup loss.”

The accident occurred on Sunday at Ore in Ondo State, as the team made their way back to Ebonyi State after participating in the Federation Cup final. Eyewitnesses reported that the crash was caused by a brake failure, leading their team bus to collide with the rear of a moving truck. The front of the bus sustained significant damage, but all passengers walked away unharmed.

“We thank God we are all safe and sound,” the official added. “Until we get the necessary approval from the state government and management, I cannot talk too much, but the thanksgiving will be done at the appropriate time.”

Abakaliki FC had reached the final of the 2025 President Federation Cup, where they lost in a dramatic penalty shootout to Kwara United. Despite the loss, the team’s safe return has brought relief to fans and supporters across the state.

Further details about the thanksgiving service are expected once official approvals are secured.
