PSL: Daniel Akpeyi helps Swallows dodge attack from Golden Arrows

By Wale Mustapha
Nigeria goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi was at his best on Saturday as he helped Swallows recorded a 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows in the opening day fixture of South Africa’s Premier Soccer League, PSL.
The Super Eagles goalkeeper switched Kaizer Chiefs for Swallows last summer ending his four years stay with the Chiefs. He was the last line between Golden Arrows to start new season with a victory as his heroics in goal saw the game ended in one apiece.
After a cagey first half that saw both sides creating few chances, the resumption got off to a bright start and it was the host who drew the first blood within five minutes into restart.
Substitute Siyanda Mthanti latched onto a through pass from Knox Mutizwa that left Swallows’ defense in disarray.
Golden Arrows went close to double their lead with few minutes after the hour mark but Akpeyi was on hand to parry a goal bound effort to corner.
Swallows refused to swallow any taste of potential defeat as they stepped up their game which earned them the equalizer in the 77th minute when Tabasa and Patjie combined well in the attack before the former buried to back of the net.
The visitors were on the back foot through remaining moments of the match but steadied through to salvage a morale boosting point in Durban.
Akpeyi and his team mates will be taking the confidence and momentum home to prepare for the visit of Cape Town City on Wednesday.
