Qatar 2022: Nigeria legend slams FIFA for aiding Argentina to win World Cup
By Wale Mustapha
Former Nigeria star, Julius Aghahowa has criticized officials of the 2022 FIFA World Cup final for aiding Argentina to win the Qatar 2022 mundial.
Lionel Messi scored from the spot early in the first half after Ousmane Dembele was adjudged to have fouled Angel Di Maria in the vital area.
Aghahowa claimed that Dembele did not make any contact with Di Maria in the buildup to the penalty that eventually shaped the start of the game.
“He [Di Maria] wasn’t touched. The game has been given before it was played,” Aghahowa told media.
“In such a game, shouldn’t it be checked by the VAR? This is clearly [a] demonstration that the World Cup was meant to be handed to Argentina and particularly, Lionel Messi, it’s unfortunate, it’s unfair.”
Di Maria made it 2-0 for the South Americans in the first half moments after the Messi’e goal from the spot.
Interestingly, France made a remarkable second half comeback with Kylian Mbappe scoring twice between 90 seconds to drag the game into extra time.
Messi would then restored the lead for the Albicelestes in the extra-time second half. However, France and Mbappe were not done with the comabacks as they PSG star scored what would then earned him the top scorer award.
Argentina went on to win the shootouts by 4-2 to lift their third FIFA World Cup.
