Rivers United appoints Nyima Nwagua as new captain after Festus Austin retirement

Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) side, Rivers United has appointed Nyima Nwagua as the new captain ahead of the 2023/2924 campaign.
His appointment comes on the heels of the retirement of Festus Austin after the erstwhile captain ended his career with the Port Harcourt-based side to take an administrative role with the club.
Nwagua has made a huge impact since joining the Pride of Rivers from Kano Pillars in September 2021 and will take over as captain from Austin who has been elevated to the position of Team Coordinator.
Nwagua has experience of wearing the armband, having been stand-in captain in some of the team’s NPFL and CAF Confederation’s Cup matches last season. He spent five seasons with the Sai Masu Gida before completing a switch to River United ahead of the 2021/2022 season.
Nwagua has been with the 2021/2022 NPFL champions for the past two seasons and won the league title during his first season with the team scoring five goals in 33 league games.
In 2022/23 season, the former Kano Pillars man scored seven goals in 20 league games as the team finished third at the NPFL Super Six and qualified for the CAF Confederations Cup.
