Rivers United hold JS Kinshasa to goalless draw in CAF Champions League

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde
Rivers United earned a crucial goalless draw away to Jeunesse Sportive de Kinshasa in the CAF Champions League preliminary round, keeping their qualification hopes alive ahead of the return leg in Nigeria.
The Nigerian side, making a return to continental action, faced a spirited debutant at the imposing Stade des Martyrs on Saturday.
JS Kinshasa, nicknamed Les Aigles du Congo, impressed in their first-ever appearance on Africa’s biggest club stage, dominating possession and moving the ball with confidence. However, their lack of composure in attack meant Rivers United’s backline was rarely troubled.
For the visitors, defensive discipline was key. Ubong Friday and Temple Emekayi worked tirelessly to close down spaces, while goalkeeper Osagie Oni had little in the way of major saves to make.
Head coach Finidi George introduced Wisdom Samuel and Wasiu Falolu after the break to inject energy into the attack, replacing Taofeek Otaniyi and Okon Aniekeme. The changes brought some spark but not the all-important away goal.
Both teams pressed for a late breakthrough, but the contest ended 0-0, leaving the tie finely poised.
Rivers United will now seek to complete the job in front of their home fans at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, next weekend. A win would secure progression to the next round of Africa’s premier club competition.
For JS Kinshasa, the challenge is to replicate their fearless approach on the road against a more experienced opponent. With everything still to play for, the return leg promises a tense and decisive showdown.
Meanwhile, Nigeria champions, Remo Stars will host UZ Zilimadjou in the first leg of the Preliminary round of the CAF Champions League in Abeokuta on Sunday.
Kwara United on the other hand travel to Ghana to meet Asante Kotoko in the CAF Confederation Cup.
