By Saheed Afolabi
Rivers United technical adviser, Stanley Eguma is confident his side could retain the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title they won last season.
Rivers United are one of the six teams that qualified for the Super Six playoffs which will determine the champions of the NPL and continental representatives and the tactician the Pride of Rivers are not afraid of any team.
“Our chances of winning this Super Six is very bright because we are the defending champions, so we cannot be afraid of any team though we have respect for all the teams because they are all potential winners,” Eguma told NigeriaFootball.ng.
“There’s no team that cannot win the trophy, but we are careful because we are the defending champions and we have to give our best. We have to improve in our capacity to win the trophy.
“I can tell you that the spirit is high and the players are ready to go. We are working towards retaining the title. Irrespective of the fact that, we have strong teams in the Super Six, every team Remo, Enyimba, Lobi Stars and all the rest of them are all strong teams.
“So we don’t fear anyone, as the defending champions, we are the target and we played in the continent this season, we have a lot of experience too. So all we don’t want to relinquish our title so it’s going to be a difficult battle.”
On how the club were able to manage their domestic campaign with continental duties and still qualify for the Super Six, the gaffer attributed it to good administrative planning.
“It’s planning, good administrative planning, we have good technical planning and I think all this put together saw us through the season,” he continued.
“We also have a financial base and we have good administrators who are working for the success of the team like our honorable commissioner and chairman, Barrister Chris Green who have done a lot with his experience in football and our general manager, Okey Kpalukwu. We have good players, technical crew and that gave us what it takes to be at the Super Six.”
Rivers United will begin their title defense when they take on Sunshine Stars on June third by 4pm Nigeria time at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
