Rivers United’s assistant captain, Nyima Nwagua has expressed disappointment for his side’s failure to defend their Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL title at the Super Six tournament in Lagos on Sunday.
Going into the final day, Rivers needed an outright victory against the People’s Elephants to secure a back to back title, but it wasn’t meant to be as Enyimba held on firmly to ensure a share of the spoils at Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
Unfortunately, The Pride of Rivers played out a 1-1 draw with Enyimba in the last match of the Super Six playoffs to lose their title defense on the final of the 2022/2023 season.
The Aba giants took the lead with six minutes to end the first half through Ekene Awazie. Nwagua equalized for Rivers with just three minutes into restart and the contest eventually ended in a stalemate.
Following the title miss, Nwagua who scored two goals in the playoffs, commended his teammates for their resilience through the season just as he promised a better outing in the coming season.
“Feel gutted we couldn’t bring the trophy home, but I’m however proud of this team, we fought till the end,” Nwagua said as posted on his social media page.
“Want to thank the good people of Rivers State, our supporters & well wishers for their unflinching support.
“We look forward to next season in the league & on the continent.”
After finishing third on the final standings, Rivers United will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup, while Remo Stars ended on second position along side champions Enyimba will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League.
