Shola Ameobi Eyes Newcastle Return as Youth Coach
Former Super Eagles striker Shola Ameobi has expressed his strong desire to return to his beloved club, Newcastle United, in a coaching capacity to nurture young talents. Ameobi, who currently plays for League Two side Notts County, left Newcastle three years ago after a distinguished playing career, but his unwavering affection for the club has never waned.
At present, Ameobi balances his coaching responsibilities in the Notts County Academy with his active playing career. However, he envisions transitioning into a full-time coaching role in the future. In a recent interview with The Guardian, he shared his heartfelt connection to Newcastle, stating, “I love the place (Newcastle). I’m from there, and it’s what I’ve always known.”
Ameobi’s commitment to his hometown club extends to mentoring the next generation of footballers. He emphasized, “In the future, I’m certainly open to it. It’s something that I’m working towards now. I’m helping the young kids, and even if I’m not an official part of it, I will always be there to try to help the younger kids coming through. Newcastle is a club that will always be a part of my life.”
Ameobi’s journey took a new turn when he joined Notts County in January, a club grappling to maintain its place in the Football League. Reflecting on the club’s situation when he arrived, Ameobi noted, “It was on its knees. I could sense that the first time I came into the dressing room. The players had played three games under Kevin at the time and won one and drawn one, but before that, they had lost 10 in a row. You could see that. It is hard to escape that.”
Ameobi’s potential return to Newcastle as a youth coach is viewed as a significant step towards fostering the development of emerging talents within the club, further cementing his legacy within the football community.
