Sone Aluko Inspires Reading Triumph as Uzoho Dropped; Swansea, Newcastle, West Brom Falter

In a riveting English Championship encounter on Saturday, Nigeria’s Sone Aluko exhibited his prowess, propelling Reading to a resounding 4-2 victory over Derby County. Aluko, notching his second league goal this season, doubled Reading’s lead just four minutes after Liam Moore’s ninth-minute opener. Roy Beerens and Modou Barrow added to the tally, securing a convincing 3-0 lead for Reading. Although Johnny Russell and Chris Martins managed to pull two back for Derby, it wasn’t enough to thwart Reading’s triumph.
This triumph elevated Reading to the 18th spot with 18 points, while Derby slipped to sixth with 25 points in the Championship league standings. The victory marked Reading’s consecutive success following their midweek triumph over Nottingham Forest.
In LaLiga action on the same day, Francis Uzoho, the promising Super Eagles invitee, found himself absent from Deportivo La Coruna’s match day squad. Despite impressing Nigeria’s coaching staff in earlier LaLiga fixtures, Uzoho was left sidelined as Deportivo suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Meanwhile, in the Premier League, Nigerian-born Tammy Abraham couldn’t turn his senior England call-up into victory as Swansea succumbed to a 1-0 defeat against Brighton and Hove Albion. Glenn Murray’s 30th-minute strike sealed Swansea’s fate, leaving them languishing in the relegation zone at the 18th position with eight points.
At the John Smith’s Stadium, 10-man Huddersfield Town compounded West Brom’s woes with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of Rajiv van La Parra’s 44th-minute goal. Despite a late chance for West Brom, they failed to capitalize, extending their winless streak to nine league games.
In other Premier League clashes, Burnley stunned Southampton 1-0 with Sam Vokes’ 81st-minute goal, while Steve Cook’s 92nd-minute strike secured a 1-0 away win for Bournemouth against Newcastle at St. James’ Park.
