Sports Minister backs Alex Iwobi, condemns cyberbullying

Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, has urged Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi to keep his head up after facing heavy criticism from fans in the wake of Nigeria’s loss to Ivory Coast in the final on Sunday.
Iwobi featured in all seven games for the Super Eagles at the recently concluded 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire where Nigeria finished the competition in second place after losing to the hosts 2-1 in the final.
As the nephew of the iconic Nigerian footballer, Jay Jay Okocha, expectations were high for Iwobi to emulate his uncle’s stellar performances.
However, his perceived subpar performance in the AFCON finals drew the attention of fans, leading to widespread online trolls.
The distraught footballer took a drastic step by clearing his Instagram posts on Monday, February 12, 2024, initially leaving only one promotional post for his brand but eventually clearing that as well.
Enoh, who led the Super Eagles of Nigeria back home after the final has now thrown his support behind the player while condemning cyberbullying of players.
“I am aware of what is happening on social media and as a ministry, this is not the first time we are going to make a statement against bullying.
“This is not just you but our sportsmen and women in general who are exposed to bullying due to the outcome of competitions.
“You did your best for your country and I am proud of you. The leadership and the rest of the country are proud of you.
“Those who are not are in the far minority and do not speak for the rest of our country, so just be strong.
“You did your best, you are part of a team that brought home a silver medal which the country last won at AFCON 2000, which is 23 years ago. You put in your best, thank you very much.”
