Nigeria football legend Sunday Oliseh has expressed deep concern over the Super Eagles’ current World Cup qualifying campaign, stressing that failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be a disaster for the team and the nation.
The Super Eagles missed out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and as it stands, they have yet to secure a win in their first four qualifying matches for the 2026 tournament.
With up to 10 African teams set to qualify for the World Cup in 2026, Oliseh warned that Nigeria’s failure to secure one of those spots would be a serious blow to the country’s football reputation.
“Africa could be represented by as many as 10 countries at the next World Cup,” Oliseh told Supersport TV.
“We’re at the risk of not being one of these countries, and it will be a disaster if Nigeria does not qualify.”
Oliseh, who was part of the FIFA Study Group during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, revealed that it was painful to watch the tournament without Nigeria’s presence.
“I was at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for six weeks working on the FIFA Study Group, and it was painful that Nigeria were not there,” he said.
With Nigeria’s next qualifier scheduled against Rwanda in March 2025, the pressure is on the Super Eagles to turn their fortunes around and ensure they don’t miss out on another World Cup.
Oliseh’s comments serve as a wake-up call for the team and their supporters, highlighting the importance of qualifying not just for the nation’s pride, but for the continued growth and development of Nigerian football.
