Super Eagles B hold Zanzibar in goalless friendly ahead of CHAN 2024

By Dayo Awoniyi

Nigeria’s Super Eagles B were held to a 0–0 draw by Zanzibar in a preparatory friendly match at the Amaan Stadium on Monday, as both sides continued their build-up to the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.

Despite dominating possession and showing defensive organization, Nigeria struggled in front of goal, with missed chances and a lack of creative edge undermining their control of the match.

Midfielder Michael Tochukwu stood out with a commanding display at the heart of midfield, dictating the tempo and linking play effectively between defense and attack. His composed presence and intelligent distribution kept Nigeria in control for large spells of the game.

The defensive unit, consisting of Sodiq Ismail, Junior Nduka, Leo Ngenge, and Taiwo Abdulrafiu, impressed with a solid performance that kept Zanzibar at bay. Goalkeeper Ani Ozoemena was rarely called into action but produced a key save in the first half to ensure a clean sheet.

However, the forward line, led by Sikiru Alimi and Anthony Ijoma, failed to capitalize on scoring opportunities. Ijoma came closest in the 65th minute, but his header was comfortably saved by the Zanzibar goalkeeper.

While Coach Eric Chelle will be encouraged by the team’s structure and defensive discipline, concerns remain over the lack of attacking sharpness and final-third decision-making.

Nigeria’s inability to convert possession into goals highlighted the need for more creativity and cohesion in attack.

The Super Eagles B will face Zanzibar again in a few days, providing another opportunity to refine their approach and gain momentum ahead of CHAN qualification fixtures.
