Super Eagles crave for another African Cup of Nations title – Austin Eguavoen

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

The Head of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Department, Austin Eguavoen believes the Nigeria has the capability and capacity to win the next African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.

Since winning the last African title ten years ago, the West African side has managed a bronze medal in 2019, having seen the Super Eagles celebrated success on the continent three times in 1980, 1994, and 2013.

Eguavoen was in charge of the team the last time out in Cameroon as the three-time African champions crashed out in the Round of 16 despite winning all three group games.

The former Nigerian defender admitted that it won’t be easy for the team to win the next AFCON despite their pool of talents but insists all hands must be on deck to reclaim the coveted diadem.

“We have been craving to try to get the Nations Cup back, since 2013 we’ve not been able to achieve that feat because we know we have the capacity, we have the quality and everything to be able to win it,” Eguavoen told Brila FM.

“But to say it is easy to achieve it is another thing, so everybody has to work towards the same goal, support the team whichever way we can, support the coaches and the players have to go out there and do the job.”

The team has been drawn with host, Cote d’Ivoire, Equatorial Guinea, and Guinea Bissau in Group A of AFCON 2023 taking place next year.

The group games will take place at the Al-Asane Ouatarra Stadium, Abidjan.
