Nigeria’s senior women’s national team reaffirmed their dominance in African football after being named the Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2025 CAF Awards held on Wednesday in Morocco.

The Super Falcons edged past strong contenders Morocco and South Africa, who finished second and third respectively at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Nigeria clinched their 10th African title in dramatic fashion earlier this year, staging an incredible comeback from two goals down to seal a thrilling 3–2 victory over hosts Morocco in the WAFCON final.

They won five of their six games with a 0-0 draw against Algeria in the group stage the only dent on their perfect record at the competition.

The win also saw the West African giants retain the prestigious award they claimed in 2024, a year that ended their long absence from the women’s football tournament of the Paris Olympics.

With momentum on their side, Justine Madugu’s team remains the favourite heading into the next WAFCON, set to take place once again in Morocco next year.

Head coach, Madugu now have a two year extension to thinker the team to the WAFCON with the chance of qualifying for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
