Super Falcons debut excites Opeyemi Ajakaye after draw against Ethiopia

By Oyediji Oluwaseun Babatunde

Former Nigerian U-20 forward, Opeyemi Ajakaye is on cloud nine after her first-ever game for the senior women’s national team on Wednesday.

The FC Robo Queens youngster was named as one of the home-based players for the Paris 2024 Olympic Qualifiers against Ethiopia at the Abebe Bikila Stadium, Addis Ababa.

She replaced FC Barcelona star, Asisat Oshoala in the second half.

After representing Nigeria at U-17 level where she was part of Bankole Olowookere’s side that won a bronze medal at the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in India, she is elated to have played her first match for the Super Falcons.

“Happy to have earned my 1st senior cap for Nigeria Super Falcons. I appreciate everyone for their support since my youth ranks.

“Wearing the Nigeria colours will always be cherished in my heart. My future is in God’s hands. Let’s get the job done next week in Abuja,” she concluded.

Ajakaye was also part of the Nigeria U-20 side that won silver at the maiden WAFU-B U-20 Championship in Ghana this year.

She will hope to get more playing times with the nine-time African champions during the Olympic Qualifiers and upcoming Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Qualifiers.
