Super Falcons edge Atlas Lionesses in five goal triller to win 10th WAFCON title

Nigeria’s senior women’s national team pipped host, Morocco 3-2 to win the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title at the Olympic Stadium, Raba on Saturday.

The Super Falcons had to com from two goals down to secure victory over the Atlas Lionesses.

Captain, Ghizlanne Chebbak opened scoring for Jorge Vilda’s side in the 13th minute latching onto a loose ball in Nigeria’s area.

11 minutes later, Sanaa Msoudy doubled the lead for the host beating Chiamaka Nnadozie from close range.

Not ready to lose their first final on the 10th occasion, the Super Falons showed champions stuff in the second half.

A foul by Benzina inside the box resulted to penalty which was converted by Esther Okoronkwo in the 64th minute.

A good move by Okoronkwo in the 71st minute set up Folashade Ijamilusi who leveled the scoreline putting the ball into an empty net.

The comeback was complete in the 88th minute as Okoronkwo delivered a free kick which was scored by Jennifer Echegini.

At the end, Super Falcons won their 10th WAFCON title with 10 different coaches, nine home based gaffer and Thomas Dennerby the only foreign manager to win the title with the team.

They have won all 10 finals they played while Morocco became the first host to lose consecutive finals.

With 10 title, Super Falcons also became the most successful women’s football team in Africa and globally.
