Nigeria’s senior women’s national team have booked their place at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) following a 1-1 draw with Benin Republic in the second leg of the qualifiers on Tuesday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex, Kuto, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Super Falcons had claimed a 2-0 victory in the first leg played in Lomé, Togo, giving them a comfortable advantage heading into the decisive fixture.

The result in Abeokuta sealed a 3-1 aggregate win, ensuring Nigeria’s qualification for next year’s continental showpiece.

Head coach Justine Madugu fielded a strong lineup that included Chiamaka Nnadozie, Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Ashleigh Plumptre, Esther Okoronkwo, Asisat Oshoala, Taiwo Afolabi, Deborah Abiodun, Tosin Demehin, Rasheedat Ajibade, and Folashade Ijamilusi.

For the visitors, coach Alassane Ouzerou named Alassane Sourakatou, Martine Hessanon, Tolande Gnami, Noelis Abamon, Deo-Gratias Ebi, Nailatou Sadikou, Lucie Tengue, Jocelyn Tchetchri, Romaine Gandonou, Germaine Honfo, and Yasminath Djibril in his starting line up.

The Super Falcons made an early breakthrough in the 12th minute when Esther Okoronkwo delivered a pinpoint corner kick that was powerfully headed home by Ashleigh Plumptre to give Nigeria the lead.

Benin Republic, however, found an equalizer in the 61st minute courtesy of Yasmine Djibril capitalizing on a defensive lapse to restore parity.

Despite late efforts from the Falcons to increase their tally, the game ended level, confirming their progress with a 3-1 aggregate triumph.

The result means Nigeria will be among the contenders at the 2026 WAFCON as they continue their pursuit of a record-extending 11h continental title.
